Testimony: Hope at a Bookshop Door

The very first CLC bookshop opened in 1941 in Colchester under the name of Evangelical Publishing House.

A testimony from the book, Leap of Faith

“A lady of about middle age entered the shop, restless, nervous, obviously ill and in need. She asked for an interesting book, ‘One that will grip.’ While being served, she said with disgust, ‘Religion! Are all these books religious? I don’t want religious stuff. I’m ill and bordering on a nervous breakdown. My life is in a mess. I cannot sleep. I must drown myself in something arresting— Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie or the like!’
“‘I, too, have been ill,’ came the answer, ‘and have known sorrow and grief. I, too, have read Sherlock Holmes, but he didn’t help!’
“‘Oh, did any special author help you?’ asked the customer. “Taking up the Gospel of John in magazine format, I said, ‘Jesus helped me. If you are heavy-laden, He is the Burden-bearer. If you have sorrow, He will give you joy. If you are in darkness, He is the Light of the world. If you have sinned, God will forgive you because Jesus died.’

“‘Jesus! How can Jesus help me?’ questioned the customer further. “‘Jesus bore our sins and griefs and carried our sorrows. You can have peace now through the blood of His cross.’ “She was arrested by the Name of Jesus. She became quieter. We walked to the shop door together. She left with the Gospel and a copy of a small booklet, A New Life. In less than ten minutes she was back again. Handing in a bunch of lovely flowers, she said, ‘No one has ever spoken to me of Jesus before. No one has ever shown me understanding and kindness!’ In a minute she was gone. We have never seen her again.”
