Living Word, Living Faith event organized by CLC UK shop in Welling

Jose Seymour, the manager of CLC Welling in the United Kingdom, has a desire to encourage and inspire local churches, and other Christian organisations, to have a greater hunger and passion for the Word of God, and to help the whole church gain greater skill in handling the scriptures.

Together with support from her husband Martin, a pastor, and other Christian leaders, she has planned a special event 'Living Word Living Faith' for September 11th. Amongst other activities, Stephen Gaukroger will be speaking and running a seminar and there will be Bible studies and, in the evening, a young people's event. There will also be a CLC bookstall during the day. Please pray for all the practical details in arranging this, and that it will be well attended. Jose hopes that this could become a yearly event for the area.
CLC Chile says "thank you" for earthquake support

It has been very encouraging for us to feel the love and concern the great family of CLC has expressed towards us since the earthquake. It is not something we are accustomed to, and it has been the first time that a number of team members have experienced in a personal way what it is to feel supported in a time of crisis as a result of a natural disaster.

We want to express our thanks to each country and each individual, who through their love and sacrifice have made it possible for this offering to reach Chile.

Together with you we say: "Bless the Lord, oh my soul and forget not his benefits" - Psalm 103:2
Fifth church-based bookstore in Philadelphia, USA

CLC United States opened its fifth church based bookstore in the Philadelphia area on Sunday July 11th. Working in partnership with local churches is a growing trend in the USA and enables Christian bookstores to open at a time when many traditional stores are falling on hard times. USA National Director, Dave Almack, comments on the store opening on his blog entry for July 11th.

Political unrest in several CLC countries

Please pray for CLC in countries which have recently experienced violence or political unrest:

Jamaica - Earlier this week a state of emergency was declared in the parishes of Kingston and St. Andrews. There has been renewed unrest here with over 70 people reported killed and many injured in the past few days. The CLC Kingston bookshop is very near the area most affected. Pray for a swift resolution to the problem and the restoration of law and order. Pray that CLC can shine the light of Jesus in the midst of this.

Romania - There is great unrest in Romania due to proposed reductions in pensions and salaries by up to 25%. Thousands of people have rallied this week in Bucharest asking the government not to go ahead with these reductions. There is a country-wide strike planned for the 31st of May, by all the unions, for an indefinite time. Pray for a peaceful resolution to this difficult situation.

Thailand - Thank you for praying. The political unrest is improving and the overnight curfew is scheduled to be removed this week in Bangkok. People in Bangkok have been reluctant to go out and for a two-week period not one customer visited the shop! CLC Chiang Mai also has suffered as book orders from Bangkok have been delayed and they need to help cover costs as Bangkok is obviously struggling financially. Please keep praying!

Chile Earthquake Update: May 2010

National Director, Isaac Zuņiga, has sent us the following update:

The Lord has been very good to us through the 'practical love' of the CLC family and others. Gifts have been used to repair damage to CLC staff accommodation, to help a number of Christian bookshops and pastors, and towards food and literature distribution in areas that have been most affected by the recent earthquake. Our sales in the last few weeks have been amazing; we see that people want to come closer to God. Praise the Lord!

Spanish publisher Unilit is printing 10,000 copies of a special edition of the book When God Doesn't Make Sense by Dr. James Dobson to send as a gift to CLC Chile. The printers, Buena Semilla in Colombia, are also helping in this project and CLC only needs to cover the shipping and importation costs!

Added to this are a number of other projects to reach the people of Chile with the comfort and hope of the Gospel message. CLC Chile is distributing 5,000 copies of More than a Carpenter and 5,000 of La Promesa, an edition of the Gospel of John. RBC Ministries (Radio Bible Class) is sending thousands of booklets from their Discovery series, having chosen 5 different themes that would be appropriate to the situation; and Tyndale has donated hundreds of copies of Where was God? by Edwin Lutzer to be sold as support for the work of CLC Chile.

Finally, there are plans for the author and psychologist Dr. Adrian Intreri, whose books are for young people and parents, to visit schools and other locations to speak to people in areas most affected by the disaster. This will probably take place in August. Please pray that all these generous offers and plans will be used of God to bring hope, healing and salvation to many people in Chile.

UK Children hear Bible stories

In 1996 a "Big Picture of the Bible" program called Bible Explorer was developed by Walk Through the Bible ministries. Since then over 400,000 children have been captivated by Bible stories they have never heard before. Imagine the delight of hearing the story of David and Goliath, Jonah, Daniel or even Jesus for the first time! The Bible is still taught in most primary schools across the UK and Ireland, but Bible Explorer allows children to be a part of the story - involving them in dramatic storytelling and innovative techniques for aiding improved recollection of events.

A new book YHWH - The Flood, The Fish and The Giant, written by bestselling author G.P. Taylor, is due to be launched on 11th May. It will not only supplement the Bible Explorer program - but reach out with Bible stories for a whole generation. For more information, or to read a chapter of the book see www.YHWHbook.com

Booksellers' Conference - Madrid, Spain

On April 17 CLC Spain organised a booksellers' event at the Hotel Melia in the centre of Madrid. Two publishers - Lifeway and Grupo Nelson - sponsored the event that allowed booksellers from across Spain to attend. In all 12 bookshops were represented. The publishers were able to present their latest projects and this gave the booksellers a much greater understanding of those publishing houses. At the close of the event there was a spontaneous time of prayer as the booksellers prayed for one another's ministry.

Italy: book signing in Turin

A well known Italian football player, Nicola Legrottaglie, will be signing his second book Cento Volte Tanto (As Many as One Hundred Times) in the CLC Turin bookshop on April 28th. His first book, Ho Fatto una Promessa, translated 'I Made a Promise', has sold over 100,000 copies in Italy and now a pocket edition has been released. Nicola, who plays for Juventus, has been interviewed many times on national television and gives a very clear testimony. Pray that this second book will be used to introduce many Italians to Jesus, as well as inform them about Nicola's life and faith.

CLC Italy announced the book signing on Facebook and within a few days over 1,100 people had responded one way or another - not all of them will attend the book signing of course but a lot of people now know about it! Please pray for Samuele Di Ruocco and Luigi Gravina, the CLC Turin shop staff, as they prepare for this busy day!

Sierra Leone "Books for Schools"

We are delighted that a container of donated books for Sierra Leone school libraries cleared customs on Wednesday this week (April 14). The timing was perfect as CLC Africa Director, Liz Patten, and CLC London manager, Petra Nemansky, were in Freetown in anticipation of its arrival.

The vision was born almost two years previously when Liz visited some schools and found libraries devoid of books. A project was devised and friends of CLC in the UK responded generously. The outcome is a container load of books that will be distributed to more than 60 schools. The official launch took place on Thursday April at the Freetown municipal library. The national TV news channel filmed the ceremony and various CLC staff were interviewed. The process of distribution will now begin. As Liz Patten writes "What a lovely start to our visit here . we give God all the glory!"

Chile Earthquake Update

The CLC bookshop in Talca has been evacuated as it has been declared uninhabitable by the local council. The problem is the large Catholic Church opposite the shop which is very unstable and in danger of collapsing following last month's earthquake. Behind the bookshop CLC has a patio area where it is safe to put up a temporary sales room and this is being constructed at the moment.

It is hoped that Williams Verdejo, the shop manager, and his wife Adriana will be able to attend customers from here from this weekend, April 10th.
Praise the Lord that things are now almost back to normal in the Conception bookshop. Director Isaac Zuniga says that this is quite miraculous considering that transport systems and general commerce are not yet functioning properly in the city.

The e-book is here to stay

The launch of Apple's iPad in the USA on Saturday April 3 is an historic date in the progress of books towards a digital format. While the Amazon Kindle has a head start and already offers more than 460.000 ebooks, the iPad has caught the public imagination. Apple's ability to produce innovative designs goes back over many years - from the Mac, to iPods to iPhones - and the iPad is expected to sell more than 3 million units in its first year. Already 300.000 were sold on the launch day.

Private enterprise will make the new product more desirable by offering thousands of apps to enable the iPad to perform a huge range of functions. No less than one million apps were downloaded on the release date.

The new iBook store will be to books what iTunes is to music. No less than 250.000 ebooks were downloaded on April 3.
Christian publishing has not been slow to respond. Zondervan announced that 1.000 of their titles would be made available on the same day as the iPad launch, including 150 children's titles and 30 Spanish titles.

Bilingual Children's Bible published in Romania by CLC

Although there are many resources and helper materials on the market to aid in learning English, only a handful can help in learning the religious and biblical vocabulary. By publishing this beautiful bilingual Bible in Romanian, we intend to fill this gap.

The Bible stories included are written in Easy International English. The main idea behind this concept is to implement simple grammar principles and a basic 1500-word vocabulary, comprised of day-to-day words used in English. Additional words not included in the Easy International English set, have been carefully picked to adapt the important Bible concepts.

CLC Romania published this Bible in co-production with Vocatio publishers. An MP3 CD is also included with the English text narrated by Wayne Shepherd. The Bible includes 416 colour illustrated pages and is sold on CLC Romania's website: www.clcromania.ro . The Bible can be shipped worldwide and costs approximately $18 (US).
New CLC Bookshop in Manta, Pacific coast of Ecuador

We are very happy to announce the opening of a new bookshop in the city of Manta on the Pacific coast of Ecuador. The shop opened its doors for the first time on 16 December 2009 and the official inauguration will take place on 23 January which will follow a meeting with the local church pastors the day before. The leadership team of CLC Ecuador will all be present for the inauguration.

The shop is 60m2 and is situated in a commercial district of the city. Together with the neighbouring city of Portoviejo, the shop will serve a community of 600.000 people. National Director, Carlos Marin is very optimistic that the shop will make a significant impact on the local community.

The shop will be staffed by manager, Patricia Cabrera and sales assistant, Jose Hidalgo. We give them a warm welcome to the CLC family.

"We are very pleased that God has provided a way for us to open this bookshop. We truly believe that it is God's timing and it will supply a great need for the Word of God in the city. Already many non Christians are finding the bookshop and it fills us with joy that we can be of service to people needing God. We want to express our gratitude to the Lord that despite all the fears of economic recession He opened the way for us to launch this new bookshop." - Carlos Marin, National Director

New CLC Bookshop in Darwin, Australia

CLC Australia is pleased to announce the opening of their latest bookshop in Darwin, Northern Territories on Monday November 2nd. This is a joint venture between CLC and the local churches. We are very grateful for the practical assistance of Mobile Mission Maintenance who helped in the re-fitting of the shop. Sue Rowe is in charge of the day to day running of the shop

Vizualizare harta marita
Darwin is in the far north of Australia, much closer to Indonesia than it is to the vast majority of Australia's population. We trust that the new shop will be a great resource centre for Bibles and Christian books in an area where it would otherwise be very difficult to find such materials.

CLC US "My Enemy... My Brother" moves up Amazon's Chart

The following is an upate from David Almack's blog:

"This was an incredibly busy and productive week. On Friday, we had an unexpected event occur that I wanted our whole team to hear about and praise the Lord with me for. We discovered that Joel Rosenberg (author of many books including his current best seller, Inside the Revolution, and the forwarder on our book, My Enemy. My Brother by Hanna Shahin) had posted a very favorable review of Hanna's book on his blog.

Joel's blog is very popular (3 million hits in one year) and this book review resulted in a massive surge of interest in our book on Amazon.com. Our book, My Enemy. My Brother had been at 644,000 in overall sales on Amazon.com and moved up to 163 during the day on Friday and was in the top 10 movers and shakers for several hours. Pray with us as we respond to this demand and await the order from Amazon to fulfill all the books that have already been ordered. In addition, Hanna Shahin will have a one hour interview on Janet Parshall's radio program this Wednesday at 3PM that is broadcast to 270 stations nationwide. What a blessing for a small publisher like CLC Publications. Who knows, this book may become our Fireproof Your Life for the rest of this year."

Book Industry News

Publishing continues to flourish during Global Crisis

The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom printed an article on Sept 25 that claimed that 800 new titles were due to be released for publication on a single day, October 1. Most of these titles are directed at the Christmas consumer market, but it is an indication that even in the middle of a significant global recession, and with growing pressure on the traditional book from digital media, book publishing and reading continues to be very popular in the United Kingdom.

NIV Bible to be revised in 2011

On Sept 1 Biblica announced that it will be presenting the first revision of the New International Bible in 2011. This is the first revision since the original publication of the NIV in 1984. The intention is to an accurate and accessible edition that reflects changes to the English language over the last 25 years.

CLC in India - known locally as ELS - is happy to announce the opening of a new bookshop in the growing city of Bangalore in southern India. The importance of Bangalore as both a growing and prosperous city, and the growth of the church there is reflected in the fact that this will be CLC's third bookshop in the city.
New National Directors

In a number of countries new National Directors have been appointed recently.

Stewart Rowe has been appointed in New Zealand. He brings a life time's experience in business to the role, as well as a commitment to seeing the Gospel being made known in New Zealand. The team has undergone many changes in recent years with the incorporation of two new shops into CLC - in New Plymouth and Palmerston North. Stewart has been actively involved in these changes and anticipates further growth in the coming years. We acknowledge the role played by Allan Welch who has recently stepped down from CLC. We are happy that he is able to continue as a Trustee.

In Spain the new national Director is Nacho Sanchez. Nacho was in his early 20s when he took responsibility for the Madrid bookshop in 2001, and this new role will be a significant new challenge for him. Nacho replaces Antonio Vargas, who will continue as the Valencia shop manager.
